도통 속내를 알 수 없는 아티스트, 후지이 카제와 함께한 하루는 가히 오래도록 기억에 남을 것이라는 확신이 들었다. 수줍은 모습으로 촬영장에 들어선 그는 카메라가 켜지는 순간, 우리가 알고 있던 바로 그 유려한 아티스트의 모습으로 변했다. 촬영장에서 나눈 짧은 대화에서는 대중에게 비춰지는 자신의 모습과 삶에 대한 생각을 조금이나마 엿볼 수 있었다.

게을러지지 않고, 일상의 순간들까지 카메라에 담겨도 괜찮은 사람으로 살아가고 싶다는 후지이 카제는 <아이즈매거진>과의 대화에서 여러 차례 ‘자신감’과 ‘강인함’을 이야기했다. 그가 말하는 삶, 그리고 한국에서의 기억에 대하여. 후지이 카제와 나눈 이야기가 한 편의 화보가 되는 순간을 만나보자.

ㅣ한국은 얼마 만의 방문인가요? 한국은 후지이 카제에게 어떤 공간인가요?
ㅣHow long has it been since your last visit to Korea? What kind of place is Korea to you?

고척스카이돔에서 지난 투어를 했던 기억이 있어요. 제주에서 녹음했던 기억도 있습니다. 아주 춥고 눈이 오는 겨울이었는데 꼭 여름에 다시 방문하고 싶어요. 한국의 하와이 같은 곳이라고 하더라고요. 이번 뮤직비디오 촬영을 한국에서 하게 돼서 감회가 새롭고, 한국 팬분들의 반응이 궁금하기도 합니다.

I have fond memories of performing at Gocheok Sky Dome during my last tour, as well as recording in Jeju. It was a very cold and snowy winter when I visited Jeju, so I’d love to go back in the summer. I’ve heard it’s like the Hawaii of Korea. It also feels special to be shooting this music video in Korea, and I’m curious to see how my Korean fans will respond to it.

ㅣ한국에서의 첫 화보 촬영인데, 오늘 촬영이 어떤 모습으로 남았으면 좋겠나요.
ㅣThis is your first fashion editorial shoot in Korea. How would you like today’s shoot to be remembered?

강인함과 자신감. 저는 자신감이 정말 중요하다고 생각해요. 단순히 외적으로 강한 모습을 보여주기보다는, 제 안에 있는 에너지나 태도 같은 것들이 사진을 통해 자연스럽게 전달됐으면 좋겠어요. 사람들이 이 화보를 보면서 강인함과 자신감을 느낄 수 있었으면 좋겠어요. 그리고 이 사진들을 보는 분들도 조금이나마 자신감을 얻을 수 있다면 정말 의미 있을 것 같아요.

Strength and confidence. I think confidence is really important. Rather than simply showing strength on the outside, I hope the energy and attitude within me come through naturally in the photographs. I’d like people to feel that sense of strength and confidence when they see this editorial. And if these images can inspire even a little more confidence in those who see them, that would mean a lot to me.

ㅣ지난해 발매한 ‘You’가 새로운 뮤직비디오와 함께 돌아왔습니다. 1년이 지난 지금 다시 돌아봤을 때, 이 곡을 바라보는 관점이 달라졌나요?
ㅣ’You’ released last year, is returning with a new music video. Looking back on the song a year later, has your perspective on it changed?

달라진 건 없어요. 여전히 저에게는 신선하게 느껴지는 곡이에요. 특히 이번에는 이 곡의 뮤직비디오를 한국에서 촬영할 수 있어서 정말 기뻐요. 제가 한국에서 새로운 방식으로 이 곡을 보여드릴 수 있다는 점도 재미있고요. 어떤 모습으로 완성됐을지 저도 궁금하고, 공개되는 날을 기대하고 있어요.

Not really. The song still feels fresh to me. More than anything, I’m really happy that we were able to shoot the music video here in Korea this time. It’s exciting to be able to present the song in a new way through something I created in Korea. I’m curious to see how it all came together, and I’m really looking forward to the day it’s released.

ㅣ언제나 You로 불렸을 후지이 카제, 스스로에게 You는 어떤 사람인가요.
ㅣFujii Kaze, who has always been called ‘You’, who is “You” to you?

흥미로운 아티스트. 저는 항상 새롭고 흥미로운 것을 시도하는 사람으로 존재하고 싶은 것 같아요. 제가 어떤 사람인지 한마디로 정의하기보다는, 계속해서 새로운 모습을 보여줄 수 있는 사람이요. 음악을 만들 때도 그렇고, 무대에 설 때도 그렇고, 제가 다음에는 어떤 모습을 보여줄지 저 스스로도 궁금한 아티스트이고 싶어요.

An interesting artist. I think I always want to be someone who tries new and interesting things. Rather than defining who I am in a single word, I want to be someone who can continue to show different sides of myself. Whether I’m making music or performing on stage, I want to remain an artist who is curious even about myself about what I might show next.

ㅣ음악, 화보 등 다양한 활동을 전개하고 있는데요. 무대 위의 자신과 카메라 앞의 자신은 어떻게 다르다고 생각하시나요?
ㅣYou work across music, fashion editorials, and other creative fields. How do you think the person you are on stage differs from the person you are in front of the camera?

저는 무대 위에 있든 카메라 앞에 있든 언제나 아티스트의 모습으로 남아 있기를 바라요. 그게 집 안이라고 하더라도요. 혼자 집에 있을 때면 게을러지기도 하지만, 그런 제 모습이 늘 마음에 드는 건 아니에요. 언제나 한결같은 사람이 되고 싶어요. 사람들이 24시간 내내 저를 라이브로 볼 수 있다고 해도 괜찮을 정도로요. 그런 삶을 살고 싶어요. 왜냐하면 저는 항상 더 나은 제 자신이 되고 싶거든요. 그래서 언제나 무대에 있는 것처럼, 언제나 화보 촬영을 하고 있는 것처럼 살아가고 싶어요.

Whether I’m on stage or in front of the camera, I always want to remain an artist—even when I’m at home. I tend to get lazy when I’m home alone, and I don’t always like that about myself. I want to be the same person at all times, to the point where I’d be completely fine with people watching me live 24 hours a day. That’s how I want to live, because I always want to become a better version of myself. So I want to live as if I’m always on stage, always in the middle of a photoshoot.

ㅣ앞으로의 활동에 대한 살짝의 스포를 해준다면요?
ㅣCan you give us a little hint about what’s coming next?

‘You’의 새로운 리믹스 EP가 곧 공개됩니다. 이번에는 한 여성 아티스트와 함께 작업했어요. 저에게 많은 영감을 주는 아티스트인데, 저는 그녀를 ‘spiritual sister’라고 표현하고 싶어요. 특히 한국의 유명한 K-POP 아티스트와 함께 작업한 적도 있어서, 한국 팬분들도 아마 잘 알고 계실 것 같습니다. 아직 자세하게 말씀드릴 수는 없지만, 한국 팬분들이 정말 좋아하실 것 같아요. 저도 빨리 여러분께 들려드리고 싶어요.

A new remix EP of ‘You’ is coming out. This time, I worked with a female artist who I would describe as a “spiritual sister” and a great source of inspiration to me. She has also worked with a well-known K-pop artist, so I think Korean fans may already be familiar with her. I can’t reveal too much just yet, but I have a feeling Korean fans are really going to enjoy it. I can’t wait for you all to hear it.

ㅣYou’re set to meet your Korean fans in person next year. Is there anything you’d like to say to those waiting for you?

먼저, 제가 한국에서 촬영한 새로운 뮤직비디오를 여러분 모두 좋아해 주셨으면 좋겠어요. 한국에서 촬영했다는 것 자체가 저에게는 정말 특별한 경험이었고, 그 결과물을 한국 팬분들이 어떻게 봐주실지도 굉장히 궁금해요. 그리고 제 앨범 [Prema]도 즐겨주셨으면 좋겠어요. 감사합니다!
